OLYMPIA, Wa, January 21, 2004 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Yesterday's 26th annual Washington State March for Life, (not the national March for Life set for Jan. 22) drew thousands to the state capital. Organizers estimated the numbers at 3,500.

Washington's first March for Life was in 1978 and drew nearly 1,250 participants, organizer Kathy McEntee, said. It has since become the largest annual rally on the Capitol Campus, drawing participants from around the state, she added.

When asked what drew her to organize the March, McEntee, who is also helping to organize a national rally in Washington, D.C. on Thursday, told reporters "We said, 'We just can't let the Legislature get away with this, and we need to make a statement.' We said, 'This is wrong,' and it wasn't something we wanted to leave for another generation."

At Tuesday's rally, two-dozen state lawmakers, including three Democrats, addressed the crowd. "We're all called to stand for life, from the womb to the tomb," said Sen. Dan Swecker, R-Rochester. "The ramifications of an abortion can be short term and long term and potentially immense."
